This was not a good day for animal or Mount McKinley viewing. The morning was hazy and the afternoon was cloudy with a few thunderstorms rolling through. We decided to do something that will burn calories instead of gas... hike the Savage River Trail. We drove to the Savage River, 15 miles from the entrance, as far as you can go without a permit. The Savage River Trail follows the Savage River for about 1 1/2 miles and then crosses the river for the return to the starting point. The river runs north at an elevation of about 2700 feet and is closed in on both sides with mountains that rise steeply to about 5000 feet. The weather held out until we returned to the campsite. | ||||||
